Mental Health: A Cornerstone of Our Wellbeing
Mental health is a fundamental aspect of our overall wellbeing, shaping how we think, feel, and act in our daily lives. It encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social welfare, influencing our ability to cope with stress, forge relationships with others, and make choices (Mental Health Foundation, 2020). Just as physical health is essential, so too is mental health. It’s not simply the absence of mental health problems; it involves feeling positive about oneself, maintaining balance in life, and effectively managing life’s ups and downs (Mind, 2018).
Good mental health doesn’t equate to constant happiness and confidence, nor does it mean ignoring problems. It’s about living well and feeling capable amidst challenges. Mental health problems can affect anyone, irrespective of age, gender, income, or ethnicity. These issues range from common problems like depression and anxiety to more complex conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and they can significantly impact one's life (NHS, 2021).
It’s important to recognise that having a mental health problem is not a sign of weakness. Seeking help for mental health issues is a sign of strength, not weakness (SANE, 2019). Prompt support and early intervention can make a considerable difference.
There are many ways to maintain good mental health, including staying active, connecting with others, learning new skills, giving to others, and focusing on the present moment (Mental Health Foundation, 2020). If you’re struggling with your mental health, remember you are not alone, and support is available. It’s perfectly acceptable to seek help. Remember, looking after your mental health is crucial for living a fulfilling life (Mind, 2018).
